Whether you’re a freshman moving into your first dorm or a parent visiting for family weekend at the University of Miami, you know how stressful it can be to try and get the whole family organized. While there’s no way to guarantee you won’t forget your favorite shirt at home, you can eliminate long treks to and from the hotel by staying as close to campus as possible.
Luckily for UM families, the chic boutique-style hotel, THesis is located just steps from campus. With THesis serving as the perfect home base for your trip, here are some of our suggestions for activities to complement these special events.
UM Move-in Made Easy | August 16-21
Fall move-in dates for UM range from August 16 to August 21, but families will likely want a couple of days after the official move-in date to grab last minute items, explore Miami and Coral Gables, and enjoy some time together. While it’s important to attend the on-campus orientation activities for both parents and students, it’s equally important to carve out some time for fun.
Start your weekend off right with morning yoga to soothe your sore, day-after-moving muscles! THesis offers group yoga classes from Green Monkey Yoga every Saturday at 10am, perfect for soaking up the Miami sun while you stretch out and find your zen. After your workout, you’ll be ready to hit the streets for some last minute back-to-school shopping. Head to The Shops at Merrick Park for luxury stores like Gucci or Miracle Mile in downtown Coral Gables for unique local boutiques.
Cap off your day with a delicious meal at Mamey Restaurant in Coral Gables. Come together as a family to enjoy island-minded cuisine from Chef Niven Patel, just minutes from the UM campus. Savor farm-fresh cuisine and colorful cocktails as you recap the day and make plans for your next visit to campus.
University of Miami Family Weekend | September 23-26
University of Miami Family Weekend is one of the best weekends of the academic calendar as families get a taste of daily life on campus. This year’s event is scheduled for September 23-26 and features a full itinerary of exciting ways to explore UM.
While you’ll have a busy weekend ahead of you, make some time to reconnect with family over a meal. Although there are many fantastic Coral Gables restaurants, Mamey on 3rd is perfect for a casual catchup between Family Weekend events or to meet up with new friends and roommates. Enjoy small bites, great conversation, and live music with a stunning view of Miami from the rooftop terrace.
Take a break from campus life by exploring the parts of Miami you won’t see on a college tour. The Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens, located less than four miles from campus, is home to 3,400 species of rare plants and over 40 species of butterflies. You can also explore Coral Gables’ winding canals by taking some of THesis’ Zybra bikes out for a spin.
